GREY Matter

Samantha Tobela, South Africa, 2020

24 minutes, Zulu/English with English subtitles

Luthando is a 17-year-old girl who struggles to connect with her autocratic father, who has changed her life completely. He has taken her away from everyday life, confining her in the house she once considered a home, but now sees as a prison. Luthando blames him for the death of her mother through suicide. When she starts having schizophrenic episodes, she decides to hide them from her father, out of fear that she will end up just like her mother…depressed and dead.
