Luthando Mngomezulu is a SAFTA and Royalty Soapie award winning Director, who hails from Umlazi,KwaZulu-Natal. In 2024 Luthando won his latest directorial accolade, when he alongside the Umkhokha: The Curse directing team scooped the 7th Royalty Soapie award for most Outstanding Directing Team. Mngomezulu alongside the The Wife: Showmax directing team scooped up the coveted South African Film and Television Award for Best Achievement in Directing for a Telenovela at the prestigious #SAFTAs17 in 2023. Mngomezulu is the Head Director of Genesis a Telenovela for Multi-choice (Mzansi Magic Channel 161). He has also directed upcoming drama series namely; a comedy series titled Stokvel Season that’s due to air on Mzansi Magic in 2026 as well as a 26 part Sepedi Drama series titled Bogaditšong that will air on the streaming platform EVod in 2026. Mngomezulu is also the Head Director for the Showmax Original 13-part Drama series 016 FM. Luthando has worked as a director in numerous productions, namely, as Lead Director of Umkhokha: The Curse Season 1, and Director of Nkalakatha: The Life of Mandoza, Sibongile and the Dlamini’s S1, Mother of All, The Wife Season 2 & 3, Durban Gen and Uzalo to mention a few. As an executive producer/director of Woldzastage Productions, Mngomezulu has produced and directed a number of films, namely Quotidian, Themba, Red Tape (first broadcast on BET Africa and also streamed on Showmax) and Maverick . These films have gone on to receive accolades and nominations such as the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Award, and numerous international nominations and awards. Luthando has directed award-winning theatre plays “Isithunzi” and “Nailed” both staged at the prestigious Market Theatre. His latest theatre direction came in September 2023 where he directed professor Zakes Mda’s We Shall Sing for theFatherland, at the Soweto Theatre. Luthando studied dramatic arts in numerous universities across South Africa, Durban University of Technology (National Diploma), Tshwane University of Technology (Bachelor of Technology) and at the University of Cape Town (Honours Degree). Luthando has since completed a second honours degree, this time in Film and Television at the University of the Witwatersrand.
