Set against the polished absurdity of Johannesburg’s Latitudes Art Fair, VIMBA! unfolds like a Ruben Östlund satire relocated to the cultural contradictions of contemporary South Africa. When a boozy street surfer is mistaken for a radical conceptual artist, he stumbles into an unlikely artworld hustle that spirals into an unholy trinity of class, commerce, and postcolonial confusion. A wealthy European buyer becomes enamoured with what she believes is a provocative installation of a discarded Black Label beer bottle. The curator, torn between integrity and opportunity, conspires with the accidental artist to sell the myth back to the market that created it. It’s not moral outrage that drives the film, but mischief.

Monde Gumede

Monde is a writer and director based in Johannesburg. He spent his build years cutting his teeth in Los Angeles and London, immersed in environments that sharpened his eye for craft and global storytelling. But it was coming home that truly shaped his voice. South Africa, with all its contradictions and kinetic energy, became the lens through which he reimagined filmmaking, merging lessons in craft with a tone and texture that could only be rooted here. Driven by complex, often imperfect characters, Monde’s films carry the irreverence of a great South African joke, loose, unexpected, and anchored in layered truth. He’s convinced the chemistry behind the camera is as influential as the story itself. Each project begins with careful curation, finding the right alchemy of collaborators who connect to the idea on a near spiritual level, and trusting that energy to elevate the work. At his core Monde is a partner. He works closely with crew, agencies, clients, and artists to uncover magnetic characters and craft stories built for a modern, global audience. His work has been recognised by The Clios, AICP, YDA (Cannes), Ciclope, 1.4, and Berlin Commercial.
