Winner of the Jury Prize at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in 2023, Kaurismäki’s 20th full-length film continues his Proletariat series. It tells the story of Ansa, a supermarket shelf-stocker on a zero-hour contract, later a recyclable plastic sorter, and Holappa, a sandblaster, an alcoholic, later an ex-alcoholic, whose paths have accidentally crossed and who, despite adversity and misunderstandings, try to build some kind of relationship on the harsher side of the welfare state. As dour as it may sound, this is an unexpectedly uplifting film with its droll, deadpan humour, and poignant central story of two lonely souls connecting.

Aki Kaurismäki

Aki Kaurismäki, born in 1957, grew up in “the age terrorized by the television,” and has tried and succeeded to maintain the inseparable realities of the real world and the “deep screen” using only 35 mm film retaining the beauty of artisan tradition against technological overkill. His films are full of quotations but always invisible, a part of a constant dialogue where particles of film culture reveal realities of the human environment, society, and psyche as it is now, and as it was during the tender years of Aki’s childhood. Only vaguely known to foreign spectators, there is always an overwhelming presence of Finnish topicalities, “objects of love” and references to well-known sources of Finnish literary evergreens, painting or of course popular music and beloved Finnish films.
