Nakhane is a South African writer, singer, songwriter and actor. Having grown up among a Christian community in Port Elizabeth, at 15 they moved to Johannesburg, leaving the church in 2013, and publicly celebrated their queerness with their debut album Brave Confusion. In 2015, Nakhane’s debut novel, Piggy Boy’s Blues, was published and has since been optioned for a film adaptation. They found both controversy and critical acclaim with their starring role in John Trengove’s 2017 feature film Inxeba (The Wound), for which they won four acting awards, including Best Actor at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. They went on to record two more studio albums and have toured Europe, the USA and Australia. In 2024, they fulfilled a long-time dream of writing and directing a short film, B(l)ind The Sacrifice, which will have its world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival.
