Raised between an Agulhas farm and suburban Cape Town, Mark’s first languages were German, Afrikaans and English. In 1999, his family emigrated to the UK where he read languages and literature at St John’s College, Oxford. He returned to South Africa in 2012 to take up a position at an advertising agency, before becoming a voice over artist and eventually an actor. During COVID, he began writing screenplays. His first short film which he wrote and directed, Marie, was selected to screen at the Durban International Film Festival in 2024. His second short film, What Would Maggie Do? won Runner Up Best Film at Filmapalooza and was subsequently chosen to screen at the Cannes Short Film Corner in May 2024. He has since shot two more short films and is currently working on his first feature film to be shot in 2026.
