Mfundo Mzolo is a South African writer, director, and producer whose work merges character-driven drama with bold genre storytelling. He began creating stories at age ten through comic books, later publishing his graphic novel Cleric in 2017. His creative path is uniquely shaped by a background in mechatronic engineering, earning a National Diploma before completing a SETA qualification in Film and Television Production at the Leaders in Motion Academy in 2020. This intersection of art and engineering informs his structured yet imaginative approach to filmmaking. Raised in a storytelling tradition grounded in izithakazelo and oral history, Mzolo’s work engages deeply with South Africa’s social and political landscape. His crime drama amaFunakonke, developed through the Durban Film Office’s Emerging Filmmakers Program, explores ambition, power, and moral compromise within the world of business forums. As writer, director, and editor, he delivered a thematically ambitious film while mentoring emerging talent.
