Human rights law specialist-turned-documentarist, Shameela Seedat worked at the Constitutional Court, Idasa and Unifem in New York before turning to filmmaking. Her documentaries have shown widely at international festivals and television stations and have received multiple prizes – and include WHISPERING TRUTH TO POWER (2018, Hot Docs Special Jury Award, Fespaco Bronze Stallion Award, Luxor African FF Jury Award, Jozi FF Best Documentary, Images of Africa prize at St Paul’s & Minneapolis FF, African Studies Association of America Award for Best Film) and AFRICAN MOOT (2022, Best Documentary Zimbabwe FF, Nominee African Movie Academy Awards, Best Editing at Boston International FF) and others. Shameela has also made various short films for television and NGOs and has published widely on law and social justice in journals, newspapers and as book chapters. She was the first in-resident film activist at Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education in 2019, taught documentary film at University of Cape Town in 2023 and served as board member of the Documentary Filmmakers Association. Shameela has been a project selector for various international documentary funds, as well as a Jury Member for the Hot Docs International Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival and Adiaha Women Filmmakers Awards.
