Rethabile Ramaphakela is an award-winning South African producer, writer, director, and showrunner, celebrated for her contributions to film and television. As the co-owner and Creative Director of Burnt Onion Productions, a company she founded with her siblings in 2008. The sibling trio brings to life a combination of fresh creativity and a commitment to quality. Rethabile kick-started her career as a kids presenter on SABC, KTV and Supersport. As soon as she completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Motion Picture Medium at AFDA, Rethabile started tackling the TV industry head-on working across a range of TV genres as a writer, showrunner and director under her company, Burnt Onion Productions. Burnt Onion Productions has delivered short- and long-form content across platforms such as Netflix, SABC, eTV, Multichoice, and Paramount (BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV, MTV Base). Rethabile has creatively spearheaded all their projects, spanning diverse genres and formats, including sitcoms, dramas, telenovelas, and reality shows. The company has also successfully produced 3 Feature Films. Rethabile’s career highlights include directing Netflix’s Seriously Single (2020) as well as directing and writing the global hit Disaster Holiday, which ranked in Netflix’s Global Top 10. She also created and produced the acclaimed Netflix Original series How to Ruin Christmas and its spinoff How to Ruin Love, as well as the 2024 YA comedy, Miseducation. Rethabile’s storytelling prowess has earned her multiple South African Film and Television Awards and she has served as a Jury member for the prestigious International Emmy Awards. Rethabile continues to push creative boundaries in film and television, shaping stories that resonate locally and globally.
