Mariki van der Walt’s career in film and television started over 30 years ago after she obtained an Honours degree (cum laude) in dramatic art. She worked all over South Africa and gained experience in almost every genre of South African television production.
Mariki joined Quizzical Pictures in 2006 as drama producer and later head of productions. In this capacity she produced various drama series, documentaries, branded content, and reality shows for Quizzical Pictures, most notably MasterChef South Africa, the multi award winning Heartlines drama series of 8 films made for television, the mini-series: Hopeville (Rose d’ Or award recipient and International Emmy nominee) and two seasons of Intersexions (Peabody award recipient). As Head of Productions at Quizzical Pictures, she was executive producer on projects such as the documentary series A Country Imagined, with Johnny Clegg, and the daily soap Rhythm City. In 2010, she produced her first feature film, “Inside Story” for the Discovery Channel, followed by “iNumber Number” (TIFF Official Selection) and “Nothing for Mahala” in 2013. In 2015, Mariki moved to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, to join Stained Glass TV, taking over as Series Producer on Uzalo Season 2,3,4, the first telenovela to be entirely shot in KZN, which is still the most watched show on SABC 1. In 2018 Mariki joined Fox Networks Group Africa as Head of Scripted Productions.
In 2020 Mariki returned to Durban as Head of Productions for Stained Glass to set up Durban Gen, a daily hospital drama for e.TV as Series Producer. Later that same year she was the Supervising Producer responsible for setting up and running the daily drama Lingashoni for Mzanzi Magic and the very successful Showmax telenovela, The Wife, Season 1 and Season 2.
From July 2022 until June 2023 Mariki was Supervising Producer for Film Afrika on the King Shaka series commissioned by CBS, filmed in KZN and Cape Town for international release. During 2023 & 2024 Mariki produced the uMjolo series for Stained Glass TV, a fully commissioned series of 4 feature films for Netflix.
Currently Mariki is the Managing Director of Stained Glass Productions.
